We all love our furry feline friends. But not matter how much we love their unique personalities, independent streaks, and sometimes rude moods, none of us enjoy scooping their poop.

This is where automatic cat litter box like the PetSafe Litter Box come into play.

In this article we’ll review the PetSafe Automatic Litter Box and cover the features, pros and cons, price and value, and if you should buy one for your home.

PetSafe Litter Box Pros

  • Automatic cleaning works well. No scooping!
  • Quality mobile app
  • Attractive design
  • Easy to set up
  • Quiet operation
  • Controls smell well

PetSafe Cons

  • Expensive compared to standard litter boxes
  • Replacement trays add extra cost
  • Still requires maintenance and effort

PetSafe Automatic Litter Box Performance

The PetSafe uses a sensor to determine when your cat has entered and left the litter box. Once your feline friend has left the litter box, there is a delay of 20 minutes before the litter box starts to work.

After the 20 minutes, the rake will start to move through the litter, pushing any cat poop or clumped litter as it goes.

Once the rake, and the poo, make it to the other end of the box, a small door opens, where the dirty litter can be discarded. After it moves into that compartment, the door will lower again.

It is a very simple design, but it works very well. I never noticed any issues with the rake getting stuck or with the door not opening or closing when it should. There are few moving parts and they all seem to operate perfectly, at least in my short time of using it.

PetSafe Automatic Litter Box Design

The design of the PetSafe isn’t anything crazy or unusual. It is a long rectangular box with a steel rake that works its way across the box.

The PetSafe Litter Box does need to be plugged in to work, so be sure you pick a location that is near an outlet.

There are a few buttons and a small LED screen on the top of the unit. The LED screen lets you know if you are connected to your home’s WIFI, how often the rake has ran, and a few other nuggets of information.

The actual device is pretty much just a plastic shell that you place over the litter tray. It is recommended that you use the litter trays and litter from the manufacturer.

Maintenance And Cleaning

Unfortunately, while the PetSafe does a great job at moving all soiled litter to one area, there is still a decent amount of cleaning required on your part.

The rake moves all cat poop and pee to the one end of the litter box. There is will sit until you decide to remove it.

Now because of the impressive gel-based litter the company uses, it does a great job at blocking any odor from the soiled litter. But after some time, the dirty litter odor will start to win the battle of smells.

At this point you’ll need to lift the device up and remove the litter tray. You then just stick a new tray in, or refill the litter if you have a reusable tray.

The manufacturers claims you should get about a month of use out of each tray, if you only have one cat. If you have two cats, you’ll maybe get 2 weeks of freshness before the odor gets bad.

Should You Buy The PetSafe Automatic Litter Box?

The PetSafe Scoop-Free Litter Box does save you a lot of effort when it comes to cleaning your cat’s litter box. If you only have one cat, you can essentially set it and forget it for three to four weeks.

Unfortunately, after the three to four weeks you do have to get your hands slightly dirty. You’ll need to remove the old litter tray and replace it with a new one. Or, if you purchased a reusable tray, you can just replace the crystal litter.

How Much Does The PetSafe Cost? The actually litter box isn’t that pricey, at around $140. If you get the second generation, which has a nice privacy hood, it will be closer to $165.

What gets expensive is having to purchase replacement litter trays and or litter. You will easily spend another $100 or more a year just on replacement trays. This is my biggest complaint about the PetSafe Litter Box.

Overall it is a very good automatic litter box. It does a great job at wrangling up your cat’s poop and at controlling the odor for several weeks. If you don’t mind spending the extra cash on replacement trays and litter, then you probably will love this scoop-free litter box from PetSafe.
